Orange County’s Toll Roads Reach 1.5 Million Open Accounts

The Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) – responsible for planning, designing, financing, constructing and operating Orange County’s 51-miles of Toll Roads – reached the exciting milestone of having 1.5 million tolling accounts.

By the Numbers:

  • There are more TCA accountholders than there are households in Orange County
  • The Toll Roads have more accountholders than the following 12 states have residents: Alaska, Delaware, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, Wyoming and Rhode Island.
  • More than 325,000 trips are taken per day on the 73, 133, 241 and 261 Toll Roads, easing congestion on nearby I-5, I-405 and 55 freeways as well as local streets and roads.

“TCA remains an industry-leading innovator by continuing to enhance customer experience by working with the private sector to develop a cutting edge mobile app, website and customer payment options as well as working with other public agencies to advance tolling technology and interoperability,” said Christina Shea, Chairwoman of the Foothill/Eastern Transportation Corridor Agency. “With more than 1,000 account sign ups per day, we are pleased to see that record levels of motorists are taking advantage of the time savings The Toll Roads provide every day.”

TCA’s next technological innovation takes place starting in June 2019 as accountholders transition from battery-operated hard-case transponders to a new sticker transponder that is small, durable and free. The thin, bandage-size transponders adhere to the inside of vehicle windshields to collect tolls. The new technology will enable all of TCA’s 1.5 million accountholders to use all toll facilities in California while simplifying customers’ preferred payment options.

“TCA remains one of modern tolling's leading agencies, bringing much-needed traffic relief to Orange County, as evidenced by our 1.5 million tolling accounts,” said Mike Kraman, TCA’s Chief Executive Officer. “We’re grateful our customers continue to see the value The Toll Roads provide as the fastest, easiest and most predictable way to get to and through Orange County.”

TCA’s solid financial health and continued growth in transactions and revenue reflect The Toll Roads’ value to Orange County’s vibrant economy and transportation network. Since 2012, The Toll Roads’ ridership has increased by nearly 25 percent.

The Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) are two joint powers authorities formed by the California legislature in 1986 to plan, finance, construct and operate Orange County’s public toll road system. Fifty-one miles of the system are complete, including the 73, 133, 241 and 261 Toll Roads. TCA continues to meet the region’s growing need for congestion-free transportation alternatives.
