Austin Sand Filter

Working in conjunction with an adjacent wetland, the Austin San Filter is a system owned and operated by TCA to drain and filter stormwater runoff near Ford Road and Bison Avenue in the City of Newport Beach, CA.

Pollutants are trapped or strained out at the surface of the filter bed, ensuring the water flowing throughout the area is free from waste. The sand bed acts as the gravity media filtration system that removes pollutants and reduces nutrients from the runoff and directs the treated water into Bonita Creek, one of TCA’s 17 mitigation sites.

The Austin Sand Filter requires preventative and corrective maintenance every 10 years, and TCA staff monitors the wetland and filtration system quarterly to ensure it functions properly. TCA is currently installing a debris rack cage in the wetland, replacing the Austin Sand Filter media and upgrading the underdrain system, to ensure the Agency is doing its part to meet runoff treatment requirements.
