Rental Vehicles FAQ

Yes. Log in to your FasTrak or ExpressAccount here and add your rental car's license plate to your account. Enter the date you will return the car in the End Date field. Then, place the FasTrak transponder on the rental car's windshield. Simply moving the transponder into the rental car does not guarantee that tolls will be charged to your account. The best way to do this and avoid potential fees and penalties is to temporarily add the rental car license plate to your account. 

If you have a hardcase switchable FasTrak transponder, you can temporarily add the vehicle's license plate number to your account and transfer that hardcase transponder to the vehicle.

If you have a sticker transponder, please do not remove it in an attempt to put it in your rental/loaner vehicle. The antenna will break and the sticker transponder will become unusable. Instead, temporarily add the rental/loaner vehicle’s license plate number to your account. License plate recognition will collect the toll(s) via your account using the payment method of your choice.

You can also pay tolls incurred by a rental/loaner vehicle at, The Toll Roads free app or through your rental company.

If you do not have an account, you can have tolls charged directly to your credit card while using a rental car. Once you enter the license plate number, you will be directed through a process to have tolls charged directly to your credit card for all or part of your rental period. Some rental car agencies require you to pre-register the vehicle before driving The Toll Roads. Any trips incurred before you register the vehicle will be charged directly through the rental car agency after you return the vehicle, according to your rental agreement.

Save your Confirmation Number and click here to change the end date of your rental period for up to seven more days. Be sure to extend the end date before the original time period lapses to avoid penalties and fees.

Have your Confirmation Number and click here. Once logged in, you'll be able to update the information for your rental car. 

You can register now if you plan to drive The Toll Roads again and want to pay future tolls directly. However, any trips incurred in your rental vehicle before you registered will be charged directly to you by the rental car company. This is because The Toll Roads have agreements with major rental car companies that allow tolls to be charged directly to you through your rental agreement. You can contact your rental car company for more information on how tolls are charged. 

If you visit California often, you should consider signing up for a FasTrak account. FasTrak can be used to pay tolls on all tolled bridges, lanes and roads in California. If you frequently visit Orange County and only drive on the 73, 133, 241 or 261 Toll Roads, consider an ExpressAccount. Click here to learn more about accounts. Whichever you choose, you will need to add your rental car's license plate to your account each time you visit to avoid penalties or fees.

Registering your rental car with The Toll Roads will ONLY cover tolls for the 73, 133, 241 and 261 Toll Roads in Orange County.

The following California toll facilities DO NOT accept this payment method:

  • 91 Express Lanes in Orange County
  • 10/110 Metro ExpressLanes in Los Angeles
  • 125 South Bay Expressway in San Diego
  • I-15 Express Lanes in San Diego
  • I-580 and I-680 Express Lanes in the San Francisco Bay Area
  • Toll bridges in the San Francisco Bay Area, including the Golden Gate Bridge
