Rental Vehicles FAQ

Yes. Log in to your FasTrak or ExpressAccount here and add your rental car's license plate to your account. Enter the date you will return the car in the End Date field. Then, place the FasTrak transponder on the rental car's windshield. Simply moving the transponder into the rental car does not guarantee that tolls will be charged to your account. The best way to do this and avoid potential fees and penalties is to temporarily add the rental car license plate to your account.

You can pay tolls when driving a rental car directly with The Toll Roads or via your rental company. If you have a FasTrak account with a hardcase FasTrak switchable transponder you can temporarily add the vehicle's license plate number to your account and transfer that hardcase transponder to the vehicle.

If you have a sticker transponder, do not remove it from the windshield of your car to a rental/loaner car. Removing the sticker will break the antennae and the transponder will no longer work. Instead, temporarily add the rental car license plate either with your FasTrak account or pay tolls online. License plate recognition will charge the toll(s) with the payment method of your choice.

Most rental car companies offer customers payment options through your rental agreement, but before driving a rental car on The Toll Roads it is recommended to ask the rental car company how tolls are processed and fees are assessed. Additionally, some Avis and Budget car rental locations in California have certain vehicles equipped with FasTrak transponders that allow drivers to use any tolled bridges, lanes and roads in California with a nominal fee. For more information visit the rental vehicles page.

You can register now if you plan to drive The Toll Roads again and want to pay future tolls directly. However, any trips incurred in your rental vehicle before you registered will be charged directly to you by the rental car company. This is because The Toll Roads have agreements with major rental car companies that allow tolls to be charged directly to you through your rental agreement. You can contact your rental car company for more information on how tolls are charged.

If you visit California often, you should consider signing up for a FasTrak account. FasTrak can be used to pay tolls on all tolled bridges, lanes and roads in California. Whichever you choose, you will need to add your rental car's license plate to your account each time you visit to avoid penalties or fees.
